Kate Sheppard was a New Zealand activist, and one of the most 

important figures in our history. 

She was a leader in the struggle to make New Zealand the first country in the world to grant women the right to vote.


  1. When and where was Kate Sheppard born?liverpool england 


  1. How old was Sheppard when she moved to New Zealand?Her father died in 1862 and in 1869 Sheppard came to New Zealand with her mother, two brothers and a sister. They arrived at Lyttelton on February 8 1869 on the Matoaka.


  1. What was something that Sheppard believed women should actively be able to do?

An early feminist,she belived that woman should particapate fully in all aspects of  society,including politics.

  1. What does NCW stand for?NCW stands for National Council of Women.


  1. What were 3 actions that Sheppard took as leader of the NCW to get women their right to vote? 

    1.  Kate Sheppard co-ordinated and encouraged the work of local unions.

    2. She organised petitions to parliament asking for women to have the right to vote and persuaded  Sir John Hall.

    3.  A leading member of parliament,to support them.


  1.  What do you think was her greatest achievement?Kate sheppard is recognised as the leader of the fight to win the right for new  zealand women to vote. 


  1. Why do you think this was so important?I think this is important because woman had the right to vote and kate sheppard did that she got a team and then other countries had the right to vote too.
